A behind-the-scenes gallery

This is the barrel of the black power rifle. The actual length of the barrel is in the neighborhood of 4 feet long. This made photographing it slightly difficult because panning out to include the entire barrel would have been too far away to see any engraving details. In this image the breech plug is in and you can see hand engraved scroll with silver and gold inlays.

Early photo of the barrel. The client and I worked on the design in stages. This was an early stage. By this time I had figured out that the 4ft length of the barrel made it a bitch to engrave. You can see a couple of the design sketches in the next photo.

Little intricate engravings like this one are going to be inlaid into the stock.

Black Powder Rifle
This project involved custom engraving a black powder rifle. This particular style of rifle is called a Virginia rifle. However, the Client I worked with was not interested in making a replica - he wanted something that he could customize with images that he liked and represented his own particular style. This is just a fun project to make a pretty sharp looking rifle. That's it!

Incidentally, this was the top side of the buttplate.

Mountain Man Buttplate
Technically this project is part of the black powder rifle project, which you can see posted above, but the reason I have posted it separately is because there are so many process pictures, which I hope you can enjoy.
I recieved this buttplate as rough unfinished sandcasted hunk of brass. I had to file, sand, and finish the entire piece before I could do any work on it.
The job for the client was to create a sculpted engraving of a mountain man. He had plenty of reference photos and wanted to include certain things like a powder horn, a boot knife, and of course a black powder rifle.
Ive sculpted it using a variety of hand tools incling gravers, files, scrapers, stones, wheels, burnishiers, and polishing.

This is a fantastic brooch that was made to commemorate my Great Aunt and Uncle's 50th wedding Anniversary. George wanted to have five gemstones on my Aunt Leslie's brooch, where each gem represented a decade of marriage.

This picture reveals a little bit about how this piece was made. First I set the diamond in the metal, then I engraved the flower around it. Finally, I cut it all out leaving some room to design in a stem and leaf or two to add to the bouquet.
